Mucinex DM

Mucinex DM is one of three over the counter Mucinex products that are taken to fight off mucus and phlegm.  Mucinex DM contains guaifenesin (as do all Mucinex products) along with Dextromethorphan.  The guaifenesin component is the actual phlegm fighter while dextromethorphan serves as the cough suppressant.

The product is sold in the form of 600mg and 1200mg extended release tablets neither of which requires a prescription.

Mucinex DM works wonders for many people, but like all other medicines, the recommendations on the label must be followed by the person using the product. According to warnings on the label, the product must not be used for  children under 12 years of age or if you are now taking a prescription monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI)  or for 2 weeks after stopping the MAOI drug.  Also, if persons who are pregnant or breastfeeding should consult with their doctor before taking this product.

The other issue to keep in mind when taking this product is that of persistent symptoms (such as cough) that do not go away.  If a cough persists for a week or so, then a physician should be consulted.  Cough illnesses such as pertussis can last much longer than a week and require an antibiotic for treatment.

The bottom line?  Mucinex DM is an effective product for the routine cough caused by the common cough and associated phlegm buildup in a person’s airways.
