Mucinex has become a very popular over the counter treatment of congestion in recent years and we have collected information on this helpful product.
What is Mucinex? Mucinex is an expectorant that consists of the ingredient guaifenesin and is used in fighting mucus. The tablets consist of two layers: the first provides a quick release of guaifensin while the second layer releases a continued level of guaifenesin that lasts over a 12 hours period. Mucinex is produced by Adams Respiratory Therapeutics and is sold over the counter. Below is information regarding this product:

  • Expectorant – helps with loosening up mucus and enables a more productive cough.
  • Taken as a 600mg extended release layered tablet.
  • FDA approved.
  • Warnings: Product must not be taken by children under the age of 12. Product must be stored out of reach from children.
  • Pregnant women and breast-feeding women need to ask their health care professional before use.
  • Persons with a persistent or chronic cough or those that have excessive phlegm should see their doctor.
  • Directions:
  • Do not crush, break or chew tablet.
  • Take with a full glass of water
  • Adults and children 12 years of age and over: one or two tablets every 12 hours. Do not exceed 4 tablets in 24 hours.
  • Children under 12 years of age: do not use.
  • Product may be taken with or without food.
  • Mucinex is gluten and sugar free and contains no salicylates.
  • Product should be stored 68-77 degrees F.
